MEDIA RELEASE: Labor's GST Taskforce to Uncover the Impacts of a 15% GST

22/12/2015

Labor's GST Taskforce will undertake public forums throughout Australia in 2016 to listen to ordinary Australians explain how a bigger, broader GST will hurt workers, families and business operators.

The Taskforce will be led by Clare O'Neil and Sharon Claydon.

Today, the GST Taskforce launched a Christmas shopping website, which illustrates how typical Christmas lunch items will go up under the GST.

Acting Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek said that many ordinary Australians were doing it tough this Christmas.

"We understand that Christmas can be a stressful time for families.

"A 15% GST on everything - a Christmas ham, children's presents - as well as health and education - is going to significantly increase the stress on family budgets," said Ms Plibersek.

"We know that any change to the GST will hurt those who can least afford it the most, and it's something Labor will not support."

"Christmas is meant to be a time of joy, but many Australians are under huge pressure. If the Turnbull Government gets its way, Christmas is about to get a lot more expensive and stressful," said Chair of Labor's GST Taskforce, Clare O'Neil.

Sharon Claydon, Chair of the Taskforce, said there was an incredible amount of concern and uncertainty amongst ordinary Australians.

"We've been out in our electorates this past week talking to people about Mr Turnbull's plan for increased GST. We've heard from families worried about how an increased GST would impact their ability to put Christmas lunch on the table and small business owners worried about the impact an increased GST will have on consumer confidence and by extension their bottom line," Ms Claydon said.
