Media Release - LABOR PROTECTS NOVOCASTRIANS AGAINST ABBOTTS UNFAIR BUDGET, VOWS TO CONTINUE FIGHT

10/02/2014

2 October 2014 Today Labor stood up for families, pensioners and young people in Newcastle by standing up against Tony Abbotts cuts to the pension, family payments and support for job seekers. The Abbott Liberal Governments unfair Budget is in complete chaos today, with the Labor Party forcing them into a humiliating back down on their cruel Budget measures.More than four months after handing down the worst Budget in living memory, Labor today forced the Government to abandon legislation that was before the Senate. This was a massive win for the 15,746 pensioners, more than 13,000 families, and thousands of young people in Newcastle, Ms Claydon said The Governments back down was hugely embarrassing, and destroys the credibility of Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey. Labor won the fight today on behalf of those most vulnerable, but the battle isnt over. In an extraordinarily arrogant move, the Abbott Government has immediately re-introduced their savage cuts into the Parliament in a number of separate bills. Tony Abbott still wants to cut the pension. He still wants to slash support for struggling families and he still wants to leave unemployed young people with absolutely nothing to live on for six months, Ms Claydon said. Every day until the next election, Labor will fight this unfair Budget. We wont let the Abbott Liberal Government get away with their cruel cuts and broken promises.
