23 October 2014 On Tuesday 21 October 2014, the Honourable Edward Gough Whitlam AC QC, 21st Prime Minister of Australia, passed away. Gough was a giant of the Labor party and political life in Australia and devoted his life to public service. He redefined Australia through his relentless pursuit of social justice and leaves a long legacy of accessible education, affordable health care, and indigenous recognition in Australia.Thousands of Novocastrians will feel his loss, and I join them in expressing my deep condolence. Newcastle residents are invited to offer their condolences to the Whitlam family by leaving a message in a condolence book at my electorate office or online at www.alp.org.au/whitlamcondolences. All messages will be compiled and forwarded to the Whitlam Family. I acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which my office stands, the Awabakal and Worimi people, and pay my respects to Elders past and present.

I acknowledge the sorrow of the Stolen Generations and the impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. I also recognise the resilience, strength and pride of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
