MEDIA RELEASE - Claydon joins community calls for urgent action to address Stockton erosion
04 June 2022
Yesterday I met with representatives from the Stockton Community Group to discuss the dire state of Stockton Beach as a result of coastal erosion, especially in the face of recent storms and extreme weather events.
Stockton residents have already experienced the loss of vital community assets with the sudden closure and demolition of the Stockton Early Learning Centre, the only childcare facility in Stockton.
Now, the Stockton Surf Life Saving Club, the popular caf Lexies on the beach and the nearby Stockton Caravan Park all of which are publicly owned assets are in real danger of being lost altogether, due to the increase and frequency and severity of the beach erosion.
The continued erosion of Stockton Beach is having a devesting impact on residents who are feeling more and more vulnerable to disasters now.
Coastal communities like Stockton are already living the shocking consequences of increased storms and extreme weather events on their beaches, public assets and way of life. We can't leave them stranded.
Thats why I have written to Minister Paul Toole strongly urging him to apply for Commonwealth funding and nominate the Stockton Beach erosion as an absolute priority project for the NSW Government.
Importantly, ONLY State and Territory governments are eligible to apply for these Commonwealth funds.
We have coastlines washing away and precious community assets on the precipice of being lost forever.
The problem is not going away. Its time for urgent action and Im calling on the NSW Government to deliver for our community.
