I rise today to join my Labor colleagues in strong opposition to the Automotive Transformation Scheme Amendment Bill 2014.
The Bill amends the Automotive Transformation Scheme Act 2009 and gives effects to the Abbott Liberal Government’s $500 million cut to the Automotive Transformation Scheme or ATS over 2014‑15 to 2017-18.

The Abbott Liberal Government are creating a digital divide and carving up the country into haves and have-nots when it comes to high-speed broadband.
Today’s announcement of an extended rollout of the National Broadband Network in the Hunter confirmed that large numbers of residents will only have access to a slower, inferior fibre-to-the-node broadband service relying on old copper technology.

Poverty and, extreme poverty in particular, continues to be major issue around the world.
According to the United Nations, global extreme poverty, that is, people living on less than $1.25 per day, has halved since 1990, but more than 1.2 billion people remain in extreme poverty today.

Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon is hosting a workshop today for local community groups on how to secure public and private funding grants.
More than 35 community organisations and not-for-profit groups will attend the workshop that will focus on how to best prepare and write successful grant applications.

The Abbott Liberal Government’s $7.6 billion cut to overseas aid is a broken promise that will hurt the world’s poor.
Tanya Plibersek, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development, was in Newcastle today and addressed a large audience about the cuts at a public forum at University House.
Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Brendan O’Connor was in Newcastle today and has welcomed the National Labour Force figures for August released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), but said at 6.1 per cent the figure is still too high.

I rise today to support the amendments moved by the Member for Port Adelaide on the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Repeal) Bill.
When it comes to the environment, climate change and the renewable energy sector more broadly, this Government is building quite the reputation.
Regretfully this reputation is nothing short of abysmal.
