New data from the Federal Government has revealed the cost of child care continues to soar for Novocastrian families.

Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon said that child care fees in Newcastle have climbed 3.8% over the previous 12 months.

“Families are now paying an extra 3.8% for child care than they did a year before,” Ms Claydon said.

“This outstrips our anaemic wages growth and is more than double the national inflation rate of 1.7%.”

Ms Claydon said the child care hikes were adding to the financial pain families were already feeling.

“This is a big hit to household budgets which are already groaning under the weight of flatlining wages and soaring energy and housing prices,” Ms Claydon said.

“Families are telling me they’re struggling to keep their heads above water.”

Ms Claydon said that nationally, child care costs have grown by almost 35 per cent since the Liberals came to power.

“The Government has broken its promise to families that the new system would bring fees down, and they have absolutely no plan to control skyrocketing fees,” Ms Claydon said.

“Every family deserves to be able to access affordable, high-quality early education. It’s now up to the Morrison Government to deliver.”
